Are Tattoos Haram? – A Complete Guide

A young sister in Islam came up to me and asked “Are Tattoos Haram in Islam?”.

She really wanted to get a tattoo done on her body to beautify herself. But she was also very God conscious and didn’t want to do anything that would displease her creator Allah.

I was really impressed that despite being so young and so eager to get a tattoo on her body. She was still conscious about her faith as a Muslim and wanted to seek Allah’s pleasure before her own. As a Muslim I adored her connection and love for Allah and wished I was as connected to Allah at her age.

I knew what I was about to tell her would not make her upset at all. She would be happy with what Allah and His Messenger have said regarding tattoos.

However, she did put one condition on me. She said that I have to give her evidence from the Qur’an and authentic hadith of the Prophet about tattoos. Naturally, in Islam we do not give verdicts based on our own understanding. Everything is based on what Allah and His Prophet (peace be upon him) have said. So this was a fair (and very intelligent) condition to put forward.

So many of our Muslim youth are eager to learn about the ruling in Islam regarding tattoos. So I thought I’d produce this helpful guide with all the questions the bright young lady asked me regarding tattoos being halal or haram in Islam.

Are Tattoos Haram?

Are Tattoos Haram in Islam?

Tattoos are haram (prohibited) in Islam and considered a major sin. The evidence for this is the numerous hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) regarding tattoos. The Prophet cursed the women who get tattoos done and those that tattooed others.

Narrated by ‘Abdullah:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed. Seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.

[Collected by Jami` at-Tirmidhi • Vol. 5, Book 41, Hadith 2782 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/urn/630040

A similar narration is found in the hadith collection of Imam Bukhari

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has cursed the woman who tattoos (others) or gets herself tattooed“.

[Collected by Sahih Al Bukhari • Book 77, Hadith 152 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/bukhari/77/152

In just about every book of hadith known to us. There is a report of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) mentioning Allah’s curse is on the one who gets tattoos.

There is no ambiguity around the ruling of tattoos in Islam. There is unanimous consensus among the scholars of Islam that tattoos are haram.

Is it a Sin to get a Tattoo in Islam?

Yes, it is a major sin in Islam to get a tattoo. Muslims are strictly prohibited to get tattooed or tattoo anyone else.

The reason why it is a major sin is because Allah curses the one who gets tattooed or tattoos others. Anything in Islam where we find that Allah or His Messenger curse the one doing it, is considered a major sin.

So having a tattoo is a major sin and as Muslims we should stay away from getting a tattoo or tattooing others.

Narrated Ibn ‘Umar:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Allah has cursed the woman who tattoos or gets herself tattooed“.

Are Temporary Tattoos Haram? - Mendhi/Henna

Are Temporary Tattoos Haram?

Temporary tattoos are not haram in Islam rather they are halal. They are halal because they are not permanently changing the creation of Allah. They are simply temporary means of beautification which is permissible in Islam. Temporary tattoos will eventually fade away in a short amount of time or can be washed away at the end of the day.

The scholars of Islam state that a few days or 2-3 weeks max would qualify as temporary. Anything more would constitute as permanent. This is because they are changing the creation of Allah for a long period of time.

So for example: Henna, Bridal Mehndi, Kohl (cosmetic eye liner) and other such temporary tattoos. These all last a day or a couple of weeks before they get washed or faded away. So they all qualify as temporary means of beautification and so are permissible in Islam.

Something like microblading eyebrows which can last around six months would be haram. This is because six months is a long period of time to not come back to your natural form. So microblading would fall under permanent tattooing which is haram.

There are also other nuances when it comes to any form of temporary beautification or tattoos. I have listed some of them below.

The conditions for temporary tattoos to be halal are the following:

1. The Tattoo must not Contain Pictures of Animate Creatures

It is haram (forbidden) in Islam to draw animate creatures and beings. This includes drawings of humans, animals, birds, angels, mythical creatures (e.g. unicorns) etc.

The evidence for this is the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet cursed the picture makers (of animate creatures and beings). He said they will have the severest punishment on the Day of Judgment.

Narrated by Aisha:

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said, “The painter of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. And it will be said to them, make alive what you have created.’ ”

[Sahih Al Bukhari • Book 97, Hadith 182 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/bukhari/97/182

In another authentic narration the Prophet got angry and tore up the picture of animals in his home. Showing his discontent at those that draw pictures of animals. And also severe anger at those who display pictures of animate creatures around them.

If you were to get a tattoo of an animate living creature then it would be around you constantly. So this is why it is haram to get a temporary tattoo with pictures of animate creatures.

Narrated by Aisha:

The Prophet (peace be upon) entered upon me while there was a curtain having pictures (of animals) in the house. His face got red with anger, and then he got hold of the curtain and tore it into pieces. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Such people as paint these pictures will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection.

[Sahih Al Bukhari • Book 78, Hadith 136 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/bukhari/78/136

Pictures of generic patterns and fancy calligraphy are permissible. Pictures of nature such as trees, mountains, flowers etc. are also permissible as long as you do not add on faces.

So for example if you have a temporary tattoo of a flower, that is permissible. But if you have a temporary tattoo of a flower and add in a face with eyes and smile this would not be permissible.

2. The Tattoo must not Cause Harm to the Body

Inflicting pain and causing harm to oneself is a major sin in Islam. The evidence for this are the verses of the Qur’an where Allah says not to kill oneself.

And do not kill yourselves (or one another). Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.” – [Qur’an 4:29]

Source: https://quran.com/4/29

In another verse in the Qur’an Allah commands not to throw yourself into destruction.

“...and do not throw (yourselves) with your (own) hands into destruction” – [Qur’an 2:195]

Source: https://quran.com/2/195

From these verses and others we learn that causing harm to oneself is a major sin in Islam. So when having temporary tattoos done on yourself be aware of what chemical is used in the tattoo. If there is a chemical that can harm/burn the skin then this would make it haram. If the ink that you use can cause lead or ink poisoning then this again would be haram to use.

3. The Tattoo must be Permeable

Praying five times a day is an obligation upon every Muslim. One of the preconditions of praying is to be in the state of purification known as wudu (ritual ablution).

While performing wudu the water must touch the skin. So if the tattoo is not permeable/breathable the wudu will not be complete. So it is important to make sure that the temporary tattoo does not form a layer of non-permeable ink on the skin. This will prevent water from reaching the skin and nullify the wudu.

Scholars of Islam have stated that temporary mendhi and henna tattoos are permeable. So once the dried henna residue is washed off it is okay to do wudu with a tattoo imprint of the henna from then on. The wudu is valid and you can pray.

If you are a woman who is on her menses then you do not have to pray during your period anyway. So this condition of permeable temporary tattoo would not apply to you during that time. So this is the best time to get a temporary tattoo and it doesn’t matter if it is permeable or not. As long as the tattoo is completely faded away by the time your menses finishes that’s acceptable.

4. The Tattoo must not have Profanity or Obscenity in it

Vulgar language and profanity is haram in Islam and not befitting the character of a Muslim. The evidence for this is the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him). Here the Prophet defines what should not be part of the characteristic of a Muslim.

‘Abdullah narrated that the Messenger of Allah said. “The believer does not insult the honor of others (slander). Nor curse, nor commit fahishah (indecency or profanity), nor is he foul.

[Jami` at-Tirmidhi • Vol. 4, Book 1, Hadith 1977 • Graded Hasan]

Source: https://sunnah.com/tirmidhi/27/83

So it is haram to get a temporary tattoo that has insults, swear words, profanity and vulgar language. Even if it is a trend among the people this does not justify following this trend as a Muslim.

Obscenity and shamelessness are also major sins in Islam. We find in various hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that Allah has forbidden obscenity.

Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said. “None has more sense of ghaira (self-respect and honor) than Allah. And for this He has forbidden obscenity and shameful sins. Whether committed openly or secretly.

[Sahih Al Bukhari • Book 65, Hadith 4637 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/urn/179690

So it is haram (prohibited) for a Muslim to get a tattoo that has obscenity in it even if it is temporary. For example to get a tattoo of the body of a naked man or woman or a couple kissing. A tattoo of obscene profanity such as the hand and fingers to gesture a swear or insult. All such obscenities are haram and prohibited.

Why Are Tattoos Haram?

Why are Tattoos Haram?

So why is getting a tattoo Haram in Islam? Well the verse of the Qur’an and the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) give one main reason. The reason is ‘changing the beautiful creation of Allah’ which Allah defines as a satanic act.

1. Changing the Creation of Allah

The verse in the Qur’an mentions that when Satan (Shaytan) challenged Allah to mislead mankind. One of the ways in which he said that he will deceive us to the fire of hell is by ‘changing the creation of Allah’. The verse in the Qur’an is found in the ‘Chapter of Women’ (Surah An-Nisa) verses 118 to 121.

‘(Satan) whom Allah has cursed. For he had said, “I will surely take from among Your servants a specific portion. And I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them (sinful) desires. And I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle. And I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah (i.e. tattoo themselves).

And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss. Satan promises them and arouses desire in them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion. The refuge of those will be Hell, and they will not find from it an escape’. – [Quran 4:118-121]

Source: https://quran.com/4/118-121

The hadith of the Prophet clarifies one of the ways which entails changing the creation of Allah. Here the Prophet categorized getting a tattoo is changing the creation of Allah. And cursed those women that got it done and did it to others.

Narrated by ‘Abdullah:

The Prophet (peace be upon him) cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed. Seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.

[Collected by Jami` at-Tirmidhi • Book 43, Hadith 3010 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/urn/630040

Changing the creation of Allah and mutilating the body in any form is a major sin. Something that is inspired by Satan (Shaytan) not Allah (God). Whether that be disfiguring the body as a whole or even the skin through tattooing. This is why it is haram for a Muslim to have a tattoo.

As Muslims we should be grateful and pleased with the way Allah has created us. We should not seek beautification through tattooing. This is a deception of the devil and would lead us to displeasing Allah.

There are also other reasons scholars have given why tattoos are haram in Islam. Let’s analyse some of them for further reasons why tattoos are haram in Islam.

2. Pain and Risk of Infection

Tattooing is a process whereby an ink-covered needle is inserted into the skin. This process causes unnecessary self-inflicted pain and voluntary torture by someone else.

Since the needle pierces through your skin there is also a high risk of infection. Foreign entities may enter into the body leading to skin conditions and infections.

According to the well respected health experts at the Mayo Clinic. Tattooing can cause a number of infections and complications. These include allergic reactions, skin infections, inflammation, bloodborne diseases and MRI complications. Source: https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/adult-health/in-depth/tattoos-and-piercings/art-20045067

Inflicting pain and causing harm to oneself (or others) is a major sin in Islam. The evidence for this is in the Qur’an. Allah forbids mankind to throw themselves into destruction with their own hands.

…and do not throw (yourselves) with your (own) hands into destruction. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.” – [Qur’an 2:195]

Source: https://quran.com/2/195

Meaning it is forbidden to inflict pain upon yourself or allowing pain to be inflicted upon you. It is also forbidden to voluntarily make yourself susceptible to diseases and infections. Permanent tattooing is a process which does both. It causes pain and makes you open to health risks and this is why it is haram (forbidden).

3. Permanent Deception

Deception is one of the major sins in Islam. Whether that be deception in one’s speech, behavior or appearance. A Muslim is always truthful and trustworthy in his/her speech, actions and appearance.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade us from deceiving people with our appearances. An example of this is found in the hadith of our Prophet (upon whom be peace).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade people from dyeing their hair black. This is because this is a form of deception in appearance.

Imagine, an old man with grey hair beautifying himself by dyeing his hair black to seek a younger bride. But by doing so deceiving people (i.e. the young woman) into thinking he is a lot younger than he actually is.

Jabir b. ‘Abdullah reported that Abu Quhafa was taken (to the audience of the Holy Prophet). His head and beard were white like hyssop, whereupon Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

Change it with something but avoid black“. i.e. Color it but do not make it black.

[Sahih Muslim • Book 37, Hadith 124 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/muslim/37/124

Narrated by the cousin of the Prophet Ibn ‘Abbas

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said. “Some people will dye their hair black like the breasts of pigeons at the end of time. But they will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.

[Sunan an-Nasa’i • Book 48, Hadith 36 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/nasai/48/36

The wisdom of the Prophet forbidding dyeing our hair black is to avoid deception in appearance. Anything that permanently changes the appearance of a person falls under this same ruling.

In Islam permanent tattooing is a form of permanent deception in appearance. This is another reason why permanent tattoos are haram in Islam.

Quran Verse about Tattoos

Quran Verse about Tattoos

Tattoos are haram according to the Qur’an. The verse in the Qur’an that prohibits tattoos is found in the ‘Chapter of Women’ (Surah An-Nisa) from verses 118 to 121. The essence of the verse is that one of the ways Satan (Shaytan) plans to deceive us is by ‘changing the creation of Allah’. And by following him in this action Satan will have succeeded in taking us to the fire of hell.

The definition of what is ‘changing the creation of Allah’ is further found in the authentic hadith of the Messenger. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that getting tattoos is changing the creation of Allah. The Prophet cursed those that got a tattoo and gave tattoos to others.

Quran Verse about Tattoos:

“…I will mislead them, and I will arouse in them (sinful) desires. And I will command them so they will slit the ears of cattle. And I will command them so they will change the creation of Allah (i.e. tattoo themselves).” And whoever takes Satan as an ally instead of Allah has certainly sustained a clear loss. Satan promises them and arouses desire in them. But Satan does not promise them except delusion. The refuge of those will be Hell, and they will not find from it an escape’. – [Quran 4:118-121]

Source: https://quran.com/4/118-121

Hadith clarifying what it means to change the creation of Allah:

Narrated by ‘Abdullah:

The Prophet (upon whom be peace) cursed the women who practice tattooing and those who seek to be tattooed. Seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.

[Collected by Jami` at-Tirmidhi • Vol. 5, Book 41, Hadith 2782 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/urn/630040

Permanently changing the creation of Allah is a major sin in Islam. Whether that be beautification through plastic surgery or tattoos. It is something that is satanic in it’s very nature and a Muslim should avoid it at all costs.

Some people who do not have sound knowledge of Islam argue that since tattoos are not mentioned in the Qur’an by name it is not haram. This understanding is not correct for a number of reasons:

1. The Qur’an says Follow the Messenger

In eight verses in the Qur’an Allah commands the believers to obey Allah and His Messenger. Without obeying the Messenger in his sayings and actions we cannot be true believers.

“O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger. If you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best (way) and best in result.” – [Qur’an 4:59]

Source: https://quran.com/4/59

2. The Qur’an says Opposing the Messenger will lead us to Hell

In another verse Allah says to oppose the Messenger will lead us to the fire of hell. Meaning opposing the Messenger is a major sin and displeasing to Allah. If we want to seek the pleasure of Allah we should follow the sayings and actions of the Prophet (peace be upon him).

“And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers. We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.” – [Qur’an 4:115]

Source: https://quran.com/4/115

3. The Character of the Prophet was a Walking Qur’an

The Qur’an is our ultimate guidance. The sayings and actions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is the Qur’an in practice. If we want to understand the Qur’an in practical terms we look at how the Messenger practiced it.

Qatadah reported:

I said to Aisha: Mother of the Believers, tell me about the character of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). She said: “Don’t you read the Qur’an?” I said: “Yes.” Upon this she said: “The character of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the Qur’an“. (i.e. He was a walking Qur’an).

[Sahih Muslim • Book 6, Hadith 168 • Graded Authentic]

Source: https://sunnah.com/muslim/6/168

Allah in the Qur’an gives us general guidelines. The Sunnah of the Messenger clarifies to us in practice what Allah expects from us.

The most important daily ritual of a Muslim are the five daily prayers. But how to offer the five daily prayers in practice is not mentioned in the Qur’an. We learn this from the hadith literature. If we were to take the false understanding that “if it’s not mentioned in the Qur’an it is not haram”. Then we wouldn’t even know how to worship Allah in our five daily prayers.

In conclusion. Allah states in the Qur’an that changing the creation of Allah is following Shaytan (satan). The hadith of the Prophet defines that tattooing is one of the ways of changing the creation of Allah. This is why tattoos are haram in Islam.

Is Getting Allah Tattoo Haram?

Is Getting Allah Tattoo Haram?

Getting a tattoo with Allah’s name in Arabic design or calligraphy is also haram.

A Muslim’s life is centered around remembering Allah throughout the day. Mentioning Allah’s name brings about goodness and peace. But tattoos are something that are clearly prohibited in Islam. In Islam we cannot use haram means to bring about a good end. So we cannot get a tattoo with Allah’s name even as the name of Allah is blessed.

The same ruling would apply to getting a tattoo with “in sha Allah”, “masha Allah”, crescent and moon or verses from the Qur’an.

It might look cool or trendy and make you feel more of a Muslim. But ultimately tattoos are something Allah calls deception of Shaytan (Satan). And the one who gets tattoos is cursed by Allah. We cannot contradict our faith and do something that might make us “feel” more Muslim but something that is displeasing to Allah.

Furthermore, Allah’s name is blessed and as humans we are prone to doing sins. It would not be fitting to have the blessed name of Allah around you while you commit sins.

It would also be problematic if you have Allah’s name on parts of your body and go to the toilet or place it on the floor. This is why it is haram to get a tattoo with Allah’s name.

What if you’re a Muslim who already has a Tattoo?

What should you do if you already got a tattoo before becoming Muslim? Are you sinful if you already got a tattoo and didn’t know it was haram when you got it?

If you were a non-Muslim when you got a tattoo and then later accepted Islam. Or you were already a Muslim and got a tattoo before you found out it was haram. Then in’sha’Allah (God Willing) you are forgiven and there is no sin upon you.

Allah’s Mercy is such that when you accept Islam all your sins of the past are forgiven. And if you were already Muslim but didn’t know tattoos are haram but have now repented from your sin then you are also forgiven.

Allah Mercy is immense but this does not mean you mock Allah’s Mercy and get a tattoo now and then say “I’ll repent later”. This would be mocking the Mercy of Allah. If you genuinely didn’t know tattoos were haram and got one and have now repented then Allah will forgive you. In sha Allah (God Willing).

Should you Remove the Tattoo if you already have one?

Yes, the one who has a tattoo is cursed by Allah so you should remove it. This is the best.

If you genuinely cannot afford to remove the tattoos then you should cover it up. You should not show off a sin that you did in ignorance. Your tattoo should remain covered at all times if possible.

If removing the tattoo will harm your health then you shouldn’t remove it. But again, you should cover it up and not expose your sin to the people.

Tattoos are haram. Something that is cursed by Allah. So if you already have a tattoo and have now repented but cannot remove it, you should never wear it with pride or honor. A Muslim should not feel honor in doing something that is displeasing to Allah.

Sincere repentance from a sin is when you try your best to undo the sin and then seek forgiveness from Allah. So removing the tattoo and seeking forgiveness is the best.

If you find yourself weak and struggling to get the tattoo removed then do not despair. Carry on seeking forgiveness from Allah even while you have your tattoo. Never despair in the Mercy of Allah and think that Allah will never forgive you because you’re struggling. Losing hope in Allah’s Mercy would be a greater sin than getting the tattoo in the first place.

Always be sincere and seek guidance from Allah. Life is a journey from and back to Allah and only with His help will you build the strength to do the right thing.

Are Tattoos Halal?

Are Tattoos Halal or Markruh?

Majority of the scholars of Islam are in agreement that tattoos are haram in Islam and a major sin. A handful of scholars disagreed and said tattoos are makruh (disliked) not haram (prohibited). Which would make tattoos halal (permissible) in Islam according to these scholars.

However, their justification lacks credibility and has been refuted by greater scholars. Let’s discuss some of the reasons these scholars give to state tattoos are halal.

1. Tattoo were not a Fashion Statement or means of Beautification

The first false argument is that at the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) tattoos were not a fashion statement. Nor were they a means of beautification for the people.

Rather they were a means of tribal solidarity and mark of slavery among the pagan Arabs at the time of the Prophet. They were used to deform and typecast people and brand people and animals as property. According to these scholars this is why the Prophet forbade them. Not because they are bad or displeasing to Allah if you do it for beautification.

This argument is historically incorrect for anyone who knows the history of Arabia. The details of which are beyond the scope of this article. Suffice to state if we simply read the hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) we’ll find our answer.

The numerous hadith that prohibit tattoos state the same reason for tattoos being haram. That reason is “Seeking beautification by changing the creation of Allah.”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) accepted that tattoos are a means of beautification. The women at the time of the Prophet would tattoo themselves to appear more beautiful. But they are haram means of beautification because they change the creation of Allah.

In fact, tattooing was something that was practiced by the prostitutes at the time of the Prophet. They would use tattoos as a means of beautification to attract men for business. This is something well known to the scholars of history.

So the argument that tattoos were only used to deform and typecast people and not used for beautification is false. The Prophet himself informed us that tattoos were used as a means of beautification in his time.

2. Isn’t Shaving Hair and Circumcising Changing the Creation?

The second argument presented is: isn’t shaving hair and circumcising changing the creation? The answer to this is no.

The reason for this is Allah nor His Messenger ever defined these acts as changing the creation of Allah. In fact shaving hair and circumcision is something that is prescribed in Islam.

For something to be haram we need evidence from the Qur’an and Sunnah. Tattoos are haram because they are explicitly defined as changing the creation of Allah. Shaving hair and circumcising are not.

Conclusion

Permanent tattoos are haram in Islam. They change the beautiful creation of Allah. As Muslims we should not get a tattoo or tattoo others.
